Ceiling collapses
A most unusual accident took place at Super Shopping Complex last evening. Mr. Derek, the Director of the Management Committee, was invited to give a speech for the opening ceremony. By 7 pm, there was a big crowd gathered in the exhibition hall. The stage, which was temporarily built to suit the occasion, was surrounded by pots of plants. The atmosphere was perfect with a professional band playing live music in the back ground and the spotlights were all ready to be employed. Everyone looked relaxed and a group of teenagers were seen giggling at a corner, telling one another how young and gorgeous looking the speaker was.
Mr. Derek arrived promptly at 7:15 pm He made his way to the pulpit in the midst of spontaneous applause. Looking mightily pleased and honored to receive such a warm reception, he proceeded to deliver his speech. C He had just started when all of a sudden, drops of water fell from a damp patch on the ceiling above him. Keeping his cool, Mr. Derek continued on despite getting a little soaked. Suddenly, to everyone's shock, the ceiling above him collapsed and sent forth a sudden downfall. Some of the debris hit Mr. Derek and he collapsed on the floor. By that time, there was confusion not only on stage but also among the audience. Fearing that the entire building in would give way, everyone scrambled for the exits. For lunately, the few policemen present were able to effectively direct the crowd in an orderly manner to the various exits.
While the speaker was given first aid immediately, the assistant coordinator had to announce that the meeting was abandoned. The investigation into the matter is continuing and more information is expected to be released soon.
