The bad salesman
The man was probably new to the business and probably any business. He was selling little intricate wooden carvings of gods and goddesses. The items he sold were rather beautiful if attention were to be brought to the correct persons who would be more interested. He had selected the corner of Upper Serangoon Road and Hougang Avenue 8 As he stood there he did almost nothing to attract passers-by to his stall. All he did was to hold a statue in his hands to show people. Worse, he didn't even price tag the items on the table. People interested in the items had to ask him the price. Most people ignored him and walked on; a few with pouting lips. A few older people stopped and took closer looks at the items. A couple of them even bought from the man. Apparently they were instantly attracted to the statues since they did not even seem to bargain even a little. new to
Few people were buying the items possibly because of two reasons. Firstly the stall was in the wrong place. It could draw more attention if situated 20 meters away, nearer the bus interchange. He should have positioned himself in such a way that most of the bus passengers would pass by the stall. As it was, many would-be buyers probably passed by without even being aware of the stall. Secondly, the items seemed to draw the attention of only older customers - of which there were not many about. To cater to the younger passers-by the vendor should make figures of animals, comic characters, movie and TV characters and perhaps even of movie stars.
